According to the best practices and state regulations, smoke detectors should be placed in three key locations throughout your home:
Install at least one smoke detector on every level of your home, including the basement.
Place a smoke detector inside each bedroom so occupants are alerted immediately.
Install detectors in hallways and common spaces just outside bedrooms for early warning of fire conditions outside of bedroom doors.
Scheduling your free smoke detector installation is easy; we’ve already cut through the red tape for you:
1. Call us, email, visit either of our fire stations, or fill out our online form.
2. A firefighter will discuss the number of detectors needed for your home and confirm the time and location of your free installation appointment.
3. On the scheduled date, our crew will meet you at your home and install detectors at no cost (parts and labor included).
Who is eligible for this program?
All Lansing Township residents are eligible. There are no income requirements or restrictions. There are no ownership requirements, we will install in rental homes, owner-occupied homes, or any other housing situation however, they must be installed in a residence of some kind, such as an apartment, manufactured home, trailer, duplex, single-family house, townhome, condo, etcetera.
I’m not sure if I am in your service area. Can I still get a free installation?
Absolutely. Just contact us and we will sort out the paperwork.
How many smoke detectors will be installed?
Our firefighters will assess your home and install as many detectors as needed so that you sleep safer at night.
What type of smoke detectors are used?
We install 10-year battery smoke detectors at no cost to you. If you have specific needs such as hearing-impaired alerting devices, please mention that when scheduling.
I need Carbon Monoxide detectors, too?
No worries, we’ll bring them. We suggest that Carbon Monoxide detectors be placed on any floor that you sleep on or have fuel-burning appliances or motors (water heater, furnace, gas stove, etcetera).
Do I need to do anything to prepare for installation?
Nope. We may request that aggressive pets be secured. We recommend you review the home fire safety checklist.
Is there really no cost?
Correct — the program is completely free. The Lansing Township Fire Department and several other area fire departments provide both detectors and the installation at no charge thanks to several partners, such as MI Prevention and the American Red Cross.
